Infectious pathologies on the ocular surface such as keratitis, blepharitis and bacterial conjunctivitis are increasingly frequent and interfere with the life of quality of people. In recent years, the increase in antimicrobial resistant strains seems to be due to their indiscriminate and excessive use, since administering the most indicated antibiotic in the treatment of these infections is an arduous task for the visual and ocular health professional, and It requires knowing the effectiveness of the drug being administered, the dose and the treatment period. The World Health Organization (WHO) has promoted global surveillance of antimicrobial resistance; however, the biggest limitation is the lack of reliable data in some countries. Objective: Identify the most widely used antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infections of the ocular surface by optometrists in Colombia. Methods: Surveys were conducted about the antibiotic group most used by optometrists in ocular surface infections. Results: It was identified that, for each infectious pathology of the ocular surface, the optometrists in Colombia have a preferred antibiotic. Ciprofloxacin and tobramycin are used for the infectious treatment of moderate to severe bacterial conjunctivitis. For the treatment of infectious blepharitis, the antibiotic of choice is bacitracin and for infectious keratitis they are ciprofloxacin, moxifloxacin and gatifloxacin. Conclusions: According to the protocols established by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, most of the optometrists in Colombia meet the criteria established for the management of infectious diseases of the ocular surface such as blepharitis, conjunctivitis and keratitis.
