This research seeks to estimate the effect of the exchange rate on imports with its possible collateral shock on the current account deficit of the balance of payments. It was found that, according to the estimates of an autoregressive vector model (VAR), the exchange rate affects imports of capital goods to a greater extent and to a lesser extent imports of intermediate and consumer goods, in the short term . The effects of a depreciation of the exchange rate have slight effects on the deficit in the current account during the first three months, then this shock dissipates over time. Likewise, a depreciation / appreciation must be strong and consolidated over time to have significant and forceful effects on the levels of the deficit in the current account and, in the product. That is, the normal fluctuation in the short term of the rate exchange, is not a strongly explanatory variable to affect the deficit in the current account of the balance of payments. On the contrary, according to the literature found, this deficit is associated to a greater extent in the elasticities of demand for imports and exports, as well as the productive capacity of the country and the size of the economies
