Resentment and narrative in the painful experience of Améry: the resurgance of aesthetic and moral

Resumen

El presente artículo rastrea la noción y la experiencia de resentimiento en Jean Améry, víctima de tortura en los campos de concentración, y lo encadena a dos aristas de interpretación que cobran fuerza desde la narración: por un lado, la moral, que da cuenta de cómo el sujeto, a sus propios ritmos, trata de rehumanizarse, darle sentido a la identidad y al tiempo perdidos; por otra, la estética, desde el cual es posible que la víctima constituya sus propios espacios y estados de sensibilización, aunque estos rayen en una “decadencia rutilante”. En el texto, el resentimiento, más allá de su rechazo desde las interpretaciones psicologistas, se configura como un esfuerzo subjetivo e intencionado de no olvido del hecho tortuoso y sus realidades derivadas, en función de reconfigurar su presente y dimensionar la comprensión del pasado decadente.

The article in question follows the conceptualization and experience of resentment in the works of Jean Améry, a victim of torture in concentration camps, and its connection with two interpretative dimensions that draw strength from his narrative. The first fixes upon its moral aspect, which gives one to realize how the subject, at his or her own pace, attempts to re-humanize him or herself, to reconstruct identity and find meaning in the time lost; the second prizes its aesthetic facet, through which a victim of torture carves out his or her own spaces and states of awareness against a backdrop of “resounding decay.” Beyond its rejection in certain psychological schools of thought, resentment is construed in the text itself as a deliberate choice not to heal or recover fully from torture and its corresponding realities in order to rebuild and shore up one’s understanding of the decaying past.
