This degree work document in disciplinary research project modality presents a method to determine the correct location of Distributed Generation (DG) sources in a distribution system, with the aim of minimizing active power losses in the network. The optimization was performed using the Genetic Algorithm (GA) method and was implemented in Matlab software, using a free distribution algorithm, in combination with the Matpower algorithm. The proposed methodology was tested in three distribution systems of different sizes to which one or more DG units were integrated: two of the test cases correspond to IEEE systems of 10 and 34 bars, and a third system, a real case. Taken from a branch of the Arauca system, with 18 bars. Both in the test systems and in the real one, up to 2 DG plants were located, taking into account the DG capacity according to Colombian regulations. For the real case, the DG system was additionally dimensioned, assuming the photovoltaic resource as a renewable source, given the characteristics of the area. The results obtained show that the location, size and number of DG plants implemented in the systems significantly allow active power losses. The validation of the proposed methodology was carried out with the PowerWold algorithm, both in response and in calculation time. Demonstrating that the Genetic algorithm is a method capable of quickly and correctly finding the location of the DG.
