Clinic effectiveness of ketotifen fumarate in the allergic conjunctivitis treatment

| dc.description | For type I allergic conjunctivitis treatment there are many pharmacologically substances divided in groups according to their activity in vasoconstrictors, antihistamines, mastocyte membrane stabilizers and anti-inflammatory. This study used Ketotifen fumarate at 0.025%, which blocks the histamine receptors, stabilizes the mastocyte membrane and suppresses the activation of the eosinophil by cytokines. <em><strong>Objective:</strong></em> The aim of this study was to determine clinically the effectiveness of the Ketotifen fumarate at 0.025% in the allergic conjunctivitis treatment. Materials and <em><strong>Methods:</strong></em> 46 patients with clinical diagnosis of allergic conjunctivitis, verified by the lacrytest, were treated with Ketotifen fumarate at 0.025% (Zaditen), one drop every 12 hours, during one month, after that period they were clinically assessed and the lacrytest was carried out again. <em><strong>Results:</strong></em> After the treatment with Zaditen the intensity of the ocular signs and symptoms (papillas, hyperemia, mucous secretion, edema, ardor, red eye and itching) diminished significantly as well as the levels of IgE in tear (p<0,05) although this substance has no direct action on the secretion of immunoglobulin. Conclusions: The study demonstrated that beside the control of allergic conjunctivitis symptoms, the Ketotifen fumarate in a concentration of 0.025% diminished significantly the IgE levels in tear after a month of treatment. It is possible that the control of the inflammatory mediators in the conjunctiva, where the change of class can be done to IgE, had some effect to diminish the secretion of it by the (Linfocites B). | en |
| dc.description | Para el tratamiento de la conjuntivitis alérgica tipo I, existen varios principios activos farmacológicos que se agrupan según su actividad, en vasoconstrictores, antihistamínicos, estabilizadores de membrana mastocitaria y antiinflamatorios. En el estudio se empleó el fumarato de ketotifeno al 0,025% cuya acción, incluye bloqueo de los receptores de histamina, estabilizador de la membrana de los mastocitos y supresor de la activación del eosinófilo por citoquinas. <em><strong>Objetivo:</strong></em> determinar clínicamente la eficacia del fumarato de ketotifeno al 0,025% en el tratamiento de la conjuntivitis alérgica. <em><strong>Materiales y métodos:</strong></em> a 46 pacientes con diagnóstico clínico de conjuntivitis alérgica, confirmado con la prueba lacrytest, se les trató con fumarato de ketotifeno al 0,025% (Zaditen), una gota cada 12 horas, durante un mes, al cabo del cual se les valoró clínicamente y se les realizó nuevamente la prueba lacrytest. <em><strong>Resultados:</strong></em> después del tratamiento con zaditen, la intensidad de los signos y síntomas oculares (papilas, hiperemia, secreción mucosa, edema, ardor, ojo rojo y prurito) disminu-yeron significativamente. Adicionalmente, hubo disminución significativa de los niveles de IgE en lágrima, (p&lt; 0,05), aun cuando el fármaco no tiene acción directa, sobre la secreción de inmunoglobulinas. <em><strong>Conclusiones:</strong></em> el estudio demostró que además del control de la sintomatología de la conjuntivitis alérgica, el fumarato de ketotifeno al 0,025%, disminuyó significativamente los niveles de IgE en lágrima después de un mes de tratamiento. Es posible que el control de los mediadores inflamatorios en la conjuntiva, en donde se puede realizar el cambio de clase a IgE, haya influido para disminuir la secreción de la misma por parte de los (Linfocitos B). | es |
