San Basilio de Palenque has been historically prominent due to being the first free town in the continent and self perceiving as a part of Africa in America; being a community that has managed to withstand the test of time managing to hold on to its ancestral traditions that identify and distinguish its culture. However, in spite of its cultural richness, the Palenque community faces marginality issues that end up with them being subject to a collective abandonment, placing their cultural preservation at stake. The following research project addresses the preservation and visibilization of the afro-caribbean culture through arquitectonic means, employing the reintrepertation of their cultural elements and the Palenque vernacular architecture for the design of a space of production and artistic proyection.
