The characterization of the poultry farms of the Quindío department carried out by the displacement of each of them in order to deal with a survey, which design was elaborated by Fenavi (Annex K), for the campaign of eradication of Newcastle disease. The poultry activity of the department is not located in a region or municipality especially, the farms are spread by the whole departmental territory with certain trend towards the center, besides, these farms generally are bordering on another type of agricultural (farming) developments different from the rise of birds. The aviculture of the Quindío handles technological suitable parameters which allow competitiveness with other regions specialized in this area, nevertheless the commercial authority or domain that have the big producers on the departmental market and the lacking of association among small producers have converted into an obstacle for the ideal social development of the activity. Most of the poultry activity in the department is dedicated to the production of chicken of fattens (62,5 %) due to the minor time in the productive cycle and the minor costs in infrastructure, nevertheless the production of egg covers the demand of the department and some close regions. The Quindío, for the poultry production, has some advantages as like the short distances inside the department that reduces costs in transport, the water disposition that comes directly from the aqueduct and its central location inside the national territory that allows it an influence of other poultry departments.
