The study explores the importance of social innovation and community participation as key approaches for incorporating contributions into territorial planning in the processes of disaster response and recovery in the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina. The objective is to highlight local perspectives and knowledge as valuable inputs to enhance response capacity and reduce vulnerability, ultimately contributing to the construction of more resilient communities in the face of hurricanes. The research employs a mixed-methods approach that includes the analysis of the territorial structure of the islands, a pertinent theoretical-conceptual review, the collection of complementary data, and direct field observation. It is also grounded in the author's experience on the islands during the emergency caused by Hurricane Iota and the subsequent reconstruction process. To establish the relevance of the study, the first phase analyzed the actions taken by the government and humanitarian organizations during the response and reconstruction processes, critically evaluating the initiatives implemented. The second phase focused on recognizing traditional ways of occupying and appropriating the territory through the study of human, cultural, geographical, and historical aspects, which are essential for emphasizing the community’s capacities in disaster response.
