Objective: To identify the effect of serotonin reuptake inhibitor medications on the ocular surface. Methods: For the methodological development, a qualitative systematic review of the literature was conducted following the PRISMA statement criteria. This approach allows for evidence from experimental studies described by various researchers to determine if there is a relationship between serotonin reuptake inhibitors and the ocular surface. Results: The systematic review identified several studies exploring the relationship between the use of antidepressants, specifically selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and the occurrence of ocular side effects. These studies highlight variability in the presentation and severity of these effects. Conclusion: It can be concluded that antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are significantly associated with a variety of ocular side effects. The reviewed studies provide solid evidence that these medications can cause effects such as dry eye, excessive tearing, irritation, swollen eyelids, conjunctivitis, and, in more severe cases, retinopathy and Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
