El Bagre is a municipality located in the sub-region of Bajo Cauca in the department of Antioquia, which is mainly dedicated to mining industry. This project focused to work on the municipality's agriculture to analyze its potential and weaknesses about the production, research, social and commercial aspects. In the productive area, a watermelon crop was established - the Santa Amelia variety is originally used - which has the commercial characteristics of the region, 5,000 m2 were cultivated for a total of 1,500 plants, planted following a planting distance of 1,5 m between each row and 2 m between each plant. There were losses in the production due to attack by a fungal complex that caused the loss of more than 50% of the crop, however, important research findings were obtained where it was demonstrated how the application of compost in the crop has an antagonistic effect, by decreasing the damage caused by soil pathogens such as Esclerotium Sp and Fusarium Sp. In the social sphere, we worked with a folk country community in the area where it was found that there is a tremendous productive and funding capacity, as well, opportunities for agriculture projects with a territorial focus by governmental entities in charge of providing support. These advantages and productive capacities give to the rural communities of El Bagre an excellent economic alternative, which can gradually move forward from mining to an economy based on agriculture. The commercial potential of agricultural products in the municipality is also an advantage, because as the agricultural production is low, the majority of the products of the family are taken from other departments, the continuous research and improvement in the technical processes of production are fundamental pillars in the socioeconomic development of the municipality and the Bajo Cauca region
