Walter Benjamin: History from Photography
Resumen
El trabajo de Walter Benjamin se distingue por los distintos temas que colecciona y expone como fichas de un rompecabezas que no siempre puede lograr la misma imagen. Este texto recoge su trato con el tema particular de la fotografía en un esfuerzo por mostrar la relación que existe entre este y su concepto de historia. Es decir, buscamos el espacio de la fotografía como una fuente que, acorde con la dialéctica benjaminiana, desdoble nuevas formas de contar la historia, de percibirla y estudiarla. Con este propósito, el texto plantea tres momentos: el primero, la consecución de un método, que a partir de un instrumento narrativo privilegia el concepto de mirada para su desarrollo; el segundo, la presentación del tema de la fotografía y su caracterización en el pensamiento benjaminiano; y por último, el tercero, la exposición de la relación entre fotografía e historia, en un intento por señalar las posibilidades de la mirada fotográfica para dotar de un sentido histórico las imágenes.

Abstract
Walter Benjamin’s work stands out because of the different topics he collects and presents as pieces of a puzzle that cannot always reach the same image. This paper collects his approach to photography in an effort to show the relation between this topic and his concept of history. In other words, we are regarding the space of photography as a source able to unbend –according to Benjamin’s dialectics– new forms of telling, perceiving and studying history. For this purpose, three key moments are proposed: First, the achievement of a method that, through a narrative instrument, privileges the concept glance for its development; second, the presentation of the topic photography and its characterization in Benjamins’s thinking, and finally, the exposition of the relation between photography and history, in an attempt to point out the possibilities of the photographic glance to provide images with historical sense.
