The Ultrasonography was born in 1880 with the development of piezoelectric effects, and from that moment, it was applied as sonar. Since 1950, the Ultrasonography has been used by many veterinarians in small animals; in cattle is used to clinical diagnosis, reproductive and research areas. The echocardiogram, which is not a method widely used in large animals, allow the veterinarian to accurately identify cardiovascular disease and determine the effect of possible abnormalities in the current performance of the horse and the future of this one. There are different types of echocardiography: Two-dimensional, mono dimensional, three-dimensional and Doppler. The first three types can study the cardiac anatomy, whereas Doppler ultrasound can define the characteristics of blood flow that runs through the heart. In order to evaluate and generate echocardiographic measurements, transmitral flow velocity and the connection left atrial - aorta in 16 horses (8 Silla Argentina and 8 mixed breed type academy) of the army riding school located in the city of Bogota. These animals were divided into two groups: the group A consists in patients of high performance weighing from 500 to 600 kg, and the group B, patients in a lower yield (academy) weighing from 400 to 500 kg. In order to compare the dimensions between the two groups, the qualitative data (race, physical performance) and quantitative like left ventricular diameter in diastole (LVDd), left ventricular diameter in sistole (LVDs), interventricular septum in systole (IVSS), interventricular septum in diastole (IVSD), right ventricular diameter in diastole (RVDd), posterior wall in diastole (PWd), posterior wall in systole (PWs), fractional shortening (FS), fraction of ejection (FE), and at the same time, the normal speed of the spectral echocardiographic Doppler of the transmitral flow E wave, A wave, E / A and left atrium - aorta ratio (LA/ AO) relationship were other parameters studied. These data were evaluated by a descriptive analysis and student t which was performed by the program Statistix 8.0. The results with the student t are not significant between groups for the variables: EA, A wave, E wave, left atrium - aorta ratio, left atrium, diameter aorta, and ventricular diameter in diastole, septum in systole and septum in diastole. Instead, left ventricular diameter in diastole, left ventricular diameter in systole and posterior wall in diastole data established that the group A was the most significant, where the Silla Argentina horses are characterized by a physiological increase in the wall thickness and left ventricular mass, showing that the left ventricular diameter in sistole and posterior wall in diastole are increased or outside the ranges proposed by some authors. On the other hand, significance was found with fractional shortening, which although showing a significance in group B to fractional shortening, the data that gives us this group is within the ranges. Respect to fraction of ejection, it is also more significant in the group of mixed horses, but this is in the borderline range.
