Astigmatism, important finding in populations from Bogotá and Cundinamarca
Resumen
Esta investigación descriptiva buscaba conocer prevalencia del astigmatismo en dos instituciones médicas de Bogotá y tres de Cundinamarca durante marzo de 2006 y febrero de 2007. Se estudiaron 813 pacientes que asistieron a la consulta de optometría y oftalmología de los hospitales Rafael Uribe Uribe, Centro Médico San Camilo de Bogotá, hospitales El Salvador de Ubaté, San Rafael de Girardot y Mario Gaitán Yanguas de Soacha, en Cundinamarca, mediante examen clínico optométrico. La información se recolectó en la historia clínica, previamente estandarizada. Como resultado se observó que la prevalencia del astigmatismo fue 57% en el grupo de 0 a 17 años, seguido por el grupo de 18 a 35 años (56%). En cuanto a la prevalencia por sexo, se encontró que la diferencia es mínima en el grupo de hombres y mujeres (50,1% y 50,7%, respectivamente). Según el estrato socioeconómico, se presentó con mayor prevalencia en el estrato 1 (52,6%) y en segundo lugar el estrato 3 (51%). En el estudio se concluye que el astigmatismo se presenta principalmente en personas jóvenes en edad escolar y de estratos socioeconómicos bajos; por tanto, se deben precisar políticas que mejoren su calidad de vida.

Abstract
This descriptive investigation looked for the prevalence of astigmatism in 2 health institutions of Bogota and 3 of Cundinamarca from March 2006 to February 2007. It includes 813 patients who visited the optometry and ophthalmology services of the Rafael Uribe Uribe Hospital, San Camilo Health Center of Bogota, El Salvador Hospital in Ubaté, San Rafael in Girardot and Mario Gaitán Yanguas in Soacha, Cundinamarca, by means of optometric clinical examination, collecting the information in clinical history; previous standardization of the test. As result of this research, the observed prevalence of the astigmatism was 57% in the group from 0 to 17 years followed by the group from 18 to 35 years in 56%. The prevalence genus showed a small difference between men and women by 50.1% and 50.7% respectively. According to the socioeconomic layer was more prevalent the layer 1 with 52.1% and the second one was the layer 3, being 51% its prevalence. In conclusion, astigmatism appears mainly in young people in school age and of low socioeconomic layers: It is why policy must focus to improve their quality of life.
