Assessment of the selectivity of tree species with forage potential for cattle in wet premontane forest ecosystems
Resumen
En Colombia, los factores climáticos generan estacionalidad en la producción de forraje, lo cual afecta el desempeño de los animales y la rentabilidad de los sistemas ganaderos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la aceptabilidad de tres especies arbóreas con potencial forrajero en alimentación de bovinos en ecosistemas de bosque húmedo premontano. El estudio se realizó en la finca El Cardonal, ubicada en el municipio de Ubaque, Cundinamarca. Se tomó forraje de tres especies arbóreas (Sambucus nigra, Dahlias imperialis y Acacia decurrens), se suministraron 2 kg de material fresco de cada especie por animal y se colocó el forraje en comederos separados para que el animal (4 novillas raza Holstein) tuviera la oportunidad de seleccionar. El estudio duró 15 días (5 de acostumbramiento y 10 de mediciones). A cada animal se le suministraron de manera individual los forrajes durante 30 min y se evaluó el consumo voluntario, el tiempo de consumo y el número de visitas por especie. Se tomó una muestra de forraje (500 g) de cada especie, para determinar proteína cruda (PC), fibra en detergente neutro y ácido (FDN y FDA) y digestibilidad in vitro de la materia seca (DIVMS). La calidad nutricional mostró que D. imperialis fue la especie con mayor contenido de PC (25,1 %); no obstante, el S. nigra obtuvo la mejor DIVMS (66,6 %), mientras que la A. decurrens fue la especie con menor DIVMS (23,7 %) y mayor porcentaje de FDN y FDA (44,5 y 25,4 %). Las tres especies arbóreas evaluadas mostraron tener potencial para ser utilizadas en sistemas de alimentación de bovinos en ecosistemas de bosque húmedo premontano.

Abstract
In Colombia, weather elements generate seasonality in forage production, which affects animal productivity and the profitability of livestock systems. This study aims to evaluate the acceptability of three tree species with forage potential for cattle feeding in wet premontane forest ecosystems. The study was conducted at the “El Cardonal” Ranch, located in the municipality of Ubaque, Cundinamarca. Forage samples from three tree species (Sambucus nigra, Dahlias imperialis, and Acacia decurrens) were collected; 2 kg of fresh material from each species were fed to four Holstein heifers, placed in separate feeders so the animals had the opportunity to select. The study lasted 15 days (5 days of habituation, and 10 days of measurements). Forages were individually served to each animal for 30 minutes, then voluntary intake, time consumption, and the number of visits per species were evaluated. Forage samples (500 g) from each species were collected to determine crude protein (CP), neutral and acid detergent fiber (NDF and ADF), and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD). The nutritional quality showed that D. imperialis was the species with higher CP content (25.1%); however, the S. nigra got the best IVDMD (66.6%), while A. decurrens was the species with the lowest IVDMD (23.7%) and the highest percentage of NDF and ADF (44.5 and 25.4%). All three tree species evaluated were found to have potential for cattle feeding in wet premontane forest ecosystems.
