The present work relies on the presentation of a proposal to optimize the potabilization process and reuse of by products derided from the treatment in the drinking water treatment plant of the municipality of San Antonio of Tequendama, Cundinamarca. The proposal of optimization of the potabilization plant included the detail diagnosis of the unit operations and the control actually used, as well as the physical conditions and the security aspects involved´ in the treatment system. The diagnosis of the unit operations to potabilize water resulted in the checking of the design parameters compared with the recommendations established in RAS 2000 standards. The alternatives to reuse the by products derived of treatment process of raw water started from the experience of the engineers who handled the subject and some relevant physical analysis in the environmental engineering laboratory of La Salle University in the other hand qualitative and quantitative analysis were held on the raw material and products employed in the treatment plant that, together with jar tests, promoted the adjustment of the optimum dosage of chemical products, in order to provide potable water at lower costs. It was also considered the possibility of conveying and treating the water derived from the filter backwash in a package plant that was not used and situated in the lower zone of the water works building. Finally all of the operative and structural modifications recommended to increase the efficiency of the plant and the alternative for reuse of the byproducts are shown on drawings at the end of the document
