The Region: a Complicated Concept
Resumen
Responder la pregunta qué es región parece ser una cosa fácil, ya que esta es una palabra muy cotidiana; empero, cuando se empieza a definirla sobreviene la divagación. Recurrir a una definición preestablecida no aclara ni facilita mucho el asunto, ya que hay muchas y muy diversas. Se tiene, entonces, que región es un concepto complicado: de difícil comprensión y compuesto por un amplio número de aspectos. Este artículo retoma la pregunta desde el punto de vista del significado con el que se emplea el término en varios y frecuentes contextos, descompone algunos de sus atributos clave y los compara para responder, concisamente —aunque en calidad de hipótesis, por no ser un análisis semántico-formal—, a qué hace referencia constante. Al tiempo, y por tratarse de un concepto obligado para la gestión territorial, el artículo es reiterativo en el llamado a no pasar por alto la simultaneidad de fenómenos que confluyen en la región (la identidad cultural, la concurrencia, la construcción de región, entre otros), con el ánimo de que los sectores político y técnico de Colombia reparen en su seriedad y operen consecuentemente.

Abstract
Answering the question ‘what is a region?’ seems easy, as this is a common word; however, when you start to define it, you start to digress. Resorting to a previously established definition does not clarify or facilitate the matter much, since there are many and very different. Thus, we have that ‘region’ is a complicated concept: difficult to understand and comprising a number of aspects. This paper addresses this question from the point of view of the meaning with which the term is used in several and frequent contexts, breaks down some of its key attributes and compares them in order to answer, in a concise manner, as it is not a formalsemantic analysis—, what it makes constant reference to. At the same time, and because it is a mandatory concept for land management, the paper repeatedly encourages not to overlook the simultaneity of events converging in the region (cultural identity, concurrency, the construction of region, among other), so that the political and technical sectors of Colombia can note their seriousness and act accordingly.
