Zoos play a key role in ex situ conservation, but it has been shown that the captive environment induces the appearance of stress, which affects behavior and encourages the appearance of stereotyped behaviors. The concern to improve stress has led to the use of tools, such as environmental enrichment which promotes the improvement of the environment and stimulates behavior. In this work, the behavioral pattern of the captive population of the brown spider monkey (Ateles hybridus) was evaluated before and during the application of an environmental enrichment program at the Santacruz Zoological Foundation, which is made up of ten individuals of A. hybridus. The data were taken over a period of six months, dividing the observations and records into three phases. In the first phase, a total of 199 behaviors were identified in 11 categories, of which four behaviors were stereotyped behaviors and rest, locomotion, social activity and food were obtained as main behaviors. During the second phase the program was planned and developed; choosing three types of enrichments. Finally, the third phase was implemented: i) food enrichment, which generated an increase in feeding behaviors, foraging, locomotion exploration and social activity, ii) sensory enrichment stimulated the senses and the main behaviors were rest, feeding, social activity and locomotion. Finally, iii) with the occupational enrichment, the management and exploration of objects was generated, being the main behaviors; rest, food, social activity, locomotion and manipulation of objects. Jointly in the development of enrichments there was a reduction in stereotyped behaviors. The results will serve as a tool to improve the conditions of the environment, know the stress factors of the species, identify the main management aspects that promote natural behaviors in the group and achieve optimal welfare conditions.
