There are various theories that have been written to discover the determinants of economic growth. Since the mid-twentieth century, human capital has become an important factor for the growth of the economy, especially, with the work of Lucas (1988) where human capital is measured in education and is a determinant in the rate of output growth. Therefore, the present work evaluates by the method of Ordinary Least Squares (LOS) if human capital measured in education has been significant in the economic growth of Bogotá and Bucaramanga between 1990 and 2012. The macroeconomic variables used in this study are: gross domestic product (GDP), gross fixed capital formation, labor force and higher education graduates.According to the results, the study concludes that human capital in Bogotá and Bucaramanga produces different effects in the economic growth of each city in that period. To Bogota the effect is null and Bucaramanga is positive. Keywords: human capital, economic growth, higher education, Bogotá, Bucaramanga.
