For a country to achieve adequate development, it must be borne in mind that transport is a fundamental part of achieving this task, so it is of vital importance to count and maintain in good condition the different methods used for the transport of cargo, as they are: the terrestrial, the fluvial, the ferrous, and the aerial. In Colombia, the goods are transported by land, which is not very feasible, since it does not have roads in good condition, and the topography is very versatile. This leads to prices being excessively high, on the other hand, the iron method is limited to the transport of coal, raw material, among others, the same happens with the river. Multimodal transport is one of the best options for freight transport, it is also the most used in countries of the first world, but this is not possible in Colombia, since it is not invested in infrastructure, more than 75% of the railway lines are inactive, river transport is very limited, providing only 2% of the freight transport. For this and many more reasons Colombia ranks 57th out of 137 countries in 2019 with respect to the competitiveness of freight transport.
