Abstract
The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameter related to the environmental variability of milk production until 270 days (PL270) in double purpose buffaloes. The analyzed database included 12920 lactations from 2729 buffaloes crossbreed from 12 herds located in Córdoba, Sucre, Cesar and Santander provinces, Colombia. Two animal models were used. The first model was used to obtain solutions for fixed and random effects and residuals(e*) of each observation. Then, residuals were taken as an environmental variability measure, these were adjusted in a second animal model considering simultaneously additive and environmental effects. The heritability of the residual variance of PL270 characteristic was 0.13 with standard deviation of additive genetic component of 0.05, indicating that there is genetic variation for the residual variance which could be used to improve the uniformity of milk yield for buffaloes and in this way to increase the genetic progress in this species.
