Abstract
Background: Infertility affects 2 to 25% of the reproductive age population. Objective: To describe fetal complications associated with assisted reproduction techniques (ART) and determine their differences between spontaneous pregnancies and ART at the Hospital Español de México. Material and methods: Prospective cohort study, we included all singleton newborns in a period of one year. Frequencies and percentages were calculated; mean and standard deviation for continuous variables Chi square, Student's t-test and multivariate Poisson models were used for the inferential analysis. Results: We included 1,584 newborns, from which 1,365 (86.2%) where conceived spontaneously and 219 (13.8%) with ART. We found that there was an increased risk of neonatal complications such as prematurity (18.9%), neonatal jaundice (10.7%) and admisions to a neonatal intensive care unit (14.3%), as well as higher incidence of complications associated to pregnancy such as gestational hypertension (12.9%) and gestational diabetes (6.9%) among ART. Conclusions: Newborns from ART are at higher risk of complications than spontaneous pregnancies.
