Abstract
The aim of this study was to model the lactation curve for the main breeds of goats in Antioquia, Colombia. A total of 4160 tests of milk records were used, belonging to the Milk Control Program, conducted by Universidad de Antioquia and ASOCABRA in 14 sheepfolds of Antioquia from 2007 to 2011. Females with racial components belonging to Alpina, Saanen and crossbred breeds and with four or more dairy tests during 210 intervals were used. Ten non-linear models were compared using the nls2 library of the statistical program R-Project (3.1.3). The best models were those with the lowest scores for the information criteria AIC (Akaike Information Criterium) and BIC (Bayesian Information Criterium). The Nelder model was the one that fitted the best with the data of the alpine and crossbred goats. The Wood and Dhanoa models characterized the best the lactation curves from the Saanen breed; however, the Wood model was chosen for being more parsimonious. The non-linear models used describe the behavior of the lactation curve efficiently, finding highlighted differences among the curves of different breed types of dairy goats in Antioquia-Colombia.
