Abstract
This work examines existing evidence in the Colombian case regarding the effects of poverty and inequality dynamics on violence in the seven most important cities in Colombia. The long-term and short-term implications of successive increments of poverty and inequality on violence are discussed. To this end, this manuscript offers a description of the main determinants of violence in these cities because they are considered important factors of social instability. To perform this analysis, approximations using Poisson panel data analysis were generated. Evidence supporting the hypothesis under study was found, namely, that factors related to inequality, poverty and human capital directly influence violence in the cities under study and have negative effects on the economic and social development of the country because of their dynamic effects over time and their incidence rates across society.
