Abstract

In response to a call for proposals launched by the Colombian Society of Architects' Permanent Commission for Habitat Quality in 2007, a multidisciplinary team submitted a research project that was approved; the results of this study are commented and summarized on this paper. An instrument designed to assess the quality of housing based on users' satisfaction was applied to a sample of 124 social housing units built between 2000-2007. The results have enabled the characterization of the subject of study (housing, environment and users) and the assessment of its integral quality. As a result, professionals' responsibility to users has been determined as well as beneficiaries' participation in the production and transformation of their habitat. The paper shows that projects are characterized by a poor aesthetic image; likewise, these initiatives do not properly meet users' basic needs and do not offer flexible alternatives within participatory processes. On the contrary, these projects generate socio-spatial segregation and prioritize capital investment, disregarding the most vulnerable groups; as a consequence, there is no significant improvement in quality of life.
