Abstract

This paper explores the conditionings upon academics under what Heidegger, in his discussion on the essence of technology, calls das Gestell (the framework). Specially in the humanities, work is dominated by external forces that stress utility and measurable results over the qualitative and that which is immanent to such work. Thus, academics in the field of the humanities must contend with the reification of knowledge in the context of a cultural enterprise that undermines authentic content, through a network of market burocracies that see work in humanities as just another commodity. Academics in the humanities must learn to incorporate these contemporary problems into their subjectivity, in order to gain a clear understanding, and take a stand towards the conditions they face, and the new dimensions of human action that may serve as counterpoise.
