Study on the training of optometrists at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México: Expectations of students in their last semester

Resumen

Objetivo identificar las expectativas profesionales y laborales de los estudiantes de la licenciatura en Optometría de la Facultad de Estudios Superiores Iztacala, México. Materiales y métodos el estudio se realizó a través de entrevistas que permitieron identificar las expectativas de los estudiantes de último semestre de la carrera de Optometría. Los alumnos participantes se seleccionaron por conveniencia, es decir, se invitó a los tres grupos de octavo semestre a participar en la investigación y su decisión fue libre y sin obligaciones. Resultados se observa que los estudiantes desconocen el campo laboral y, por lo tanto, sus expectativas son vagas aunado a esto, se evidencia la falta de orientación vocacional durante el bachillerato y la ausencia de orientación respecto a su proyección laboral en la carrera de Optometría o, peor aún, el haber tenido promedios bajos que no les permitieran entrar a su primera opción. Conclusiones se deberá informar a los alumnos a lo largo de la licenciatura cuál es el campo laboral al que se enfrentarán e indicarles que su formación será la que haga la diferencia en la atención del paciente de igual forma, se recomienda que se profesionalicen para que se mantengan actualizados, así como que adelanten estudios de posgrado para que desarrollen investigación científica.

Abstract

Objective To identify the professional and career expectations of Bachelor of Optometry students at the Facultad de Estudios Superiores Iztacala, Mexico. Materials and methods The study was based on interviews that allowed to identify the expectations of students in their last semester of the Optometry program. Participating students were selected for convenience, i.e., three groups in their eighth semester were invited to participate in the research, and they had free choice and no obligations. Results The study showed that students are ignorant of the labor field and, therefore, their expectations are vague additionally, it evidenced the lack of vocational orientation in high school and the lack of guidance regarding their labor projection during the BA of Optometry program, or, worse, that they had low grade averages that did not allow them to study their first choice. Conclusions Students should be informed during the BA program about the labor field they will face and that their training will make a difference in patient care similarly, it is recommended for them to professionalize in order to stay updated, as well as to pursue graduate studies to develop scientific research.
