A characterization of the concept of natural number by the students of the BA in teaching mathematics and computing sciences
Resumen
El presente escrito tiene como origen el proyecto de investigación titulado «Caracterización de las concepciones de estudiantes para profesor de matemáticas sobre el concepto de número natural»; trabajo desarrollado en la Universidad de La Salle de Bogotá, el cual tiene por objeto caracterizar las concepciones de los estudiantes de la licenciatura sobre el tópico matemático referido. Indagar sobre las concepciones matemáticas de los estudiantes permite conocer acerca de los errores que cometen, ya sea en la resolución de problemas y ejercicios matemáticos o cuando deben argumentar sobre procedimientos, algoritmos y aspectos teóricos vinculados con problemas prácticos inclusive. El proyecto investigativo sobre el cual hace referencia el presente artículo, se inscribe en la perspectiva metodológica cualitativa, con un diseño de tipo descriptivo, se trata también de un trabajo de tipo básico, seccional, micro-social Sierra (2001). Se obtiene como resultado, que los estudiantes en la Licenciatura en Matemáticas y Ciencias de la Computación tienen las siguientes concepciones sobre los números naturales: «los números naturales como representación de cantidades» y «los números naturales con estructura de campo». Aunque estas concepciones no son correctas, dado que no corresponden a alguna definición formalmente establecida en matemáticas para el conjunto de los números naturales, dan cuenta de las ideas que tienen los estudiantes sobre el tópico matemático en consideración.

Abstract
This report has its origin in the research project: «Characterization of the student-teachers conceptions on the natural number concept», done at Universidad de La Salle in Bogotá. The project’s goal is to characterize the conceptions the students in the BA have on that mathematical topic. To inquiry about the mathematical conceptions of the students allows us to know about the mistakes they make, either in problem solving and mathematical exercises or when they have to defend procedures, algorithms and theoretical aspects linked even with practical problems. The research project this article is based on, belongs to the qualitative methodological perspective, with a descriptive type design, it is also a basic, microsocial and sectional work (Sierra, 2001). As a result, the students of the BA in Teaching Mathematics and Computing Sciences have the following conceptions of the natural numbers: «the natural numbers as representation of quantities» and «the natural numbers with field structure». Although, these conceptions are not correct since they do not correspond to any definition formally established in mathematics for the set of natural numbers, they show the ideas that the students have about this mathematical topic.
